Michael Lavery Spotlight

Michael LaveryDr. Michael Lavery joined the faculty at the University of Florida Department of Dermatology in July 2022. Dr Lavery obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University Belfast School of Medicine in Ireland, where he subsequently completed an Internal Medicine Residency. As his passion for dermatology grew, he then went on to complete a number of fellowships including a clinical research fellowship at Temple University, Philadelphia under the auspices of Dr. Gil Yosipovitch studying chronic pruritus. This was followed by a clinical fellowship at St James’ Hospital, Dublin, Ireland where he was involved in the first clinical trial on the use of Dupilumab to treat atopic dermatitis. Dr. Lavery completed a highly competitive 4-year dermatology residency program in Liverpool, United Kingdom followed by an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved pediatric dermatology fellowship at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Arizona. Throughout his training he has also completed clinical rotations in the dermatology department at the Mayo Clinic Rochester and has been awarded a scholarship to rotate through the pediatric dermatology department at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. Dr. Lavery has also provided dermatologic care to the Native American population in the Navajo Nation, Arizona.

Michael’s clinical interests include general pediatric dermatology, vascular anomalies, congenital and genetic skin disorders, and chronic itch. He also has a passion for general and complex adult medical dermatology as well as dermatologic procedures. Dr. Lavery has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, 4 book chapters, regularly peer reviews articles for leading dermatology and pediatric dermatology journals, and is an editorial board member for the dermatology journal: Skinmed: Dermatology for the Clinician. Michael has received numerous awards including the ‘Euroderm Excellence Award’ where he was selected as one of the top dermatology residents to attend a prestigious ‘invitation only’ European Dermatology conference. He has given presentations at numerous dermatology conferences including the American Academy of Dermatology, Society for Pediatric Dermatology, British Association of Dermatologists, World Congress of Dermatology, World Congress for Pediatric Dermatology, and the World Congress of the International Academy of Cosmetic Dermatology.

Outside of medicine Michael enjoys hiking, playing golf, soccer and tennis, as well as spending time with his wife and 4-year-old son.
